Why "the molehill"? ![]() |

( Metaphors ) . . . . . . . . . |
Metaphors are much used in our world, but few people are
aware of them. "Web" is one for the Internet. The problem is the web
as a metaphor doesn't go very far. A web is supposed to be beautifully woven
(unlike the Internet), fragile, and it usually hosts only one spider. What about
the users? Are they the poor flies that get caught in the web? The metaphor
doesn't go very far indeed. Let us now expand this vision, and imagine what molehills are, and the mole as a symbol, and the mole tunnels... |

A molehill can be seen as something someone has achieved.
It's an artificial hill-- a landmark. It's the one thing that shows there's
someone down there. Besides, it's made of earth, so it's 100% natural. It has
no chimney, no TV aerial. With time, the rain will wash it away. So it's
something you have to take care of. But building another one someplace else is
what moles do. They achieve things, and it shows.

The molehill looks like a home, or at least a roof. But it
is neither of these. It is nothing but a molehill, a heap of earth. The only
thing it means is that there must be tunnels below. Fake molehills are not
molehills (famous proverb). But the most talented scientist would never be able
to come up with the slightest information about the number and the direction of
the tunnels. And that's what makes those tunnels worthwhile! |

( blind guides ) . . . . . . . . . |
The mole is best known for being vision impaired. It is
often portrayed as myopic or blind. But it's better to be blind than blindfolded
(famous proverb). Anyway you do not need eyes if you live underground. Like
moles, we sometimes wander in an underground world and along tunnels which lead
us God knows where. Sometimes there are cul-de-sacs, sometimes there are just
too many places to go...
